Prof. Adebayo Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has stated that the University convocated 6,562 graduates, with 218 bagging first class honours.
Bamire made the disclosure while delivering his speech at Obafemi Awolowo University 49th Convocation Ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session at Oduduwa Hall on Thursday in Ile-Ife.
He said that undergraduate diplomas were 54; Bachelor's Degrees (classified) from 9 faculties were 5,253; Bachelor's Degrees from 4 faculties were 296; and postgraduates were 959.
According to him, graduates with first class honours were 218; graduates who bagged second class honours (Upper Division) were 2,132, while 2,244 graduates got second class honours (Lower Division); third class were 625, and 34 graduates went with Pass.
Bamire explained that convocation ceremonies have been a great platform to showcase the achievements of their great institution in teaching, research, and service deliveries.
He stated further that it is on this occasion they celebrate the academic excellence of their graduands who have been equipped to immensely make contributions to national development.
According to him, they have indeed sustained their frontline position in higher education service deliveries, and this development indeed thrills them as a flagship of academic leadership in Africa.
He applauded President Bola Tinubu's administration towards the development of the education sector as evident in his educational policies, particularly the review of curriculum of studies even at the tertiary education level.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed his profound gratitude to Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, for fostering an enabling environment that actively encourages institutional development.
"Specifically, we thank you for facilitating two major infrastructural and logistical improvements within the period.
"The beautification of Road 1, the provision of 50 CNG buses and 20 CNG tricycles by the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, which will significantly ease transportation challenges within the University."
He commended the University Council and the Management Team for their unwavering commitment to sustaining the peaceful academic environment on their campus.
The VC congratulated the graduands for their unwavering dedication to academic excellence, saying their hard work, resilience, and commitment have earned them success.
Bamire charged graduands to apply the knowledge, skills, and values gained at the University to the advancement of Nigeria and the global community.
Our Correspondent reports that the congregation observed a minute's silence for the late Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, who passed away on December 2nd, 2025.
