OAU: Ophthalmologist Adegbehingbe emerges CHS provost

Professor Bernice Adegbehingbe, a Professor of Ophthalmology, has been appointed Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.


The New Provost, Prof. Bernice Adegbehingbe, took the Baton from outgoing Provost, Prof. Babatope Kolawole during the valedictory College Assembly held at College Auditorium, OAU/OAUTHC Link Road, on Thursday in Ile-Ife.

Adegbehingbe applauded those who graced the occasion, the outgoing Deans and incoming ones, Vice-Deans, HoDs, Professors, lecturers, staff and students of the college.


She considers the appointment not only as a great honour, but a solemn responsibility and heartedly embraces it as she's ready to steer the affairs of the college for the next two years.

The First Female Provost acknowledged the esteemed members of the college assembly for unanimously electing her and sub-pledging their support as they embark on the journey together.


Ophthalmologist stated that their confidence in her leadership affirmed the values they will all share together, right from excellence in research, innovation, teaching, mentoring, transparency, integrity and unwavering commitment.

According to her, all hands must be on deck to advance human helped through cutting-edge scientific innovation with true healthcare delivery and impactful commitment to engagement.

The New Provost attributed the success and triumph of the outgoing Provost to the collective efforts of all and sundry in the college and not personal achievements.

Adegbehingbe explained that the college currently comprises four faculties and brilliant researchers, dedicated professors and passionate students who uphold its enviable standards and sustain its legacy across all running programmes.

She stated further that their purpose is to renovate and to improve the quality of life through internationally benchmark healthcare education and delivery.

"My ambition is to provide an enabling environment for all staff and students, to maintain standard education across all programmes, and to ensure a harmonised and consistent academic calendar.

"My vision is to drive curriculum innovation and to foster inclusion, empathy and resilience. Our graduates are consistently proven to be global trailblazers.

"We must keep this legacy alive by embracing recent advances in teaching, scientific research, technology and artificial intelligence for education and service delivery". She stressed.

The Ophthalmologist emphasised that the mission of their college extends beyond Nigeria's border, for they are not just training dentists, therapists and doctors, but nurturing leaders, innovators and advocates that'll shape the future globally.

She called for unity and support of  Deans, HoDs, faculties, students, administrative staff, association and partners for her to succeed, promised to try her best and would disappoint them in any form.

Earlier, the outgoing Provost Prof. Babatope Kolawole, thanked God and every member of the college alumni, especially in the diaspora, who donated immensely for the progress of the college.

Kolawole, who took the Baton of the office in Aug.2021 to July 2025, titled his stewardship achievement to "Grope, Grit and Grace, which summarises his leadership challenges, perseverance and the grace of God with the help of others that made him achieve greatly.

The outgoing Provost said that the efforts of his predecessors cannot be overemphasised by acknowledged the solid foundation they laid, on which others are building, on has led to the growth and development of the college to date.

He listed part of his achievements: basic infrastructure attained during his tenure, such as painting buildings, providing portable water, electricity, upgrading equipment, industrial machines, solar light, security cameras, and excellent internet.

Others are: provision of inverters, projectors, motorised screen, laboratory with full AC, transcript office, studentship research, additional new programmes, like Masters, PhD, mentorship programmes, accreditations, among others.

 Dignitaries that present were: former VC, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, Prof. VC Elizade University, Prof.Kayode Ijadunola, OAUTHC management, principal officers, professors, Deans, HoDs, researchers, lecturers, staff and students, among others.

The College Secretary, Mr V. C. Ohalete, appreciated all that graced the occasion, commended the outgoing Provost, who performed excellently well.
