2025 World AIDS Day: Empowering Youth to Lead Zero Generation - Nurse

Mrs. Ruth Ajayi, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), has charged all youths to lead the HIV/AIDS zero generation by eschewing all forms of immoralities.

Ajayi gave the charge during the 2025 World AIDS Day marked by Sunshine Nursery and Primary School, Road 7, Campus Gate, on Monday in Ile-Ife.

The theme of the year: "Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response"; but Nurse Ajayi lectured students on: "What Do You Know About HIV/AIDS?"

She explained that HIV/AIDS is a chronic illness like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, among others, and assured that with the advent of antiretroviral drugs, it is manageable though not curable.

The specialist lamented the lackadaisical attitude of people living with HIV/AIDS by absconding their clinics and interrupting the care, and when the virus in their blood develops resistance, the drug will no longer work for them.

She urged all and sundry to check their status to know that HIV is real and people can still get it, and should desist from sexual vices going on in our society, as it is a fast way of contracting it.

The specialist warned pupils against stigmatization and discrimination of people with HIV, but should be friendly with them and avoid bad gangs, using the same brush, and sharing of sharp objects.

Earlier, the Proprietress, Sunshine Nursery and Primary School, Dr. Bisi Anyadike, said that the motive behind the annual celebration is to produce well-tutored generational children who will be saved from the chronic disease.

Anyadike emphasised that previously they have sensitized people who have contracted the disease like nursing mothers, pregnant women, and transport workers, among others.

According to her, "if you catch them young," they will be delivered from contracting the disease and will be able to achieve the goal of HIV/AIDS zero generation.

Among the other activities done were: interactive ice-breaker and energizer for all participants, showing a video clip of a true-life story of a man with HIV positive, fun quiz, and myth-busting interactive session, among others.

Our Correspondent reports that different primary and secondary schools attended the programme and they all went home with precious gifts.
