The Loja of Lukosi Land in Ile-Ife, Osun, Oba Abdul-Lateef Awojobi, has urged his subjects to take an active role in politics to fast-track development in their area.
Awojobi said this while responding to complaints by his subjects in Ife-South Local Government Area of the state about the lack of good roads, electricity, potable water, and a school.
The traditional ruler was on a visit to villages and settlements under his domain in the local government area on Wednesday.
Oba Awojobi said that the best way to feel the government's presence in the area is for the people to take an active part in politics by vying for elective posts.
According to him, "As a royal father, there is a limit to what I can do compared to an elected political office holder, such as a councillor, local-government chairman, lawmaker or governor."
Oba Awojobi, however, said that he was working hard to bring investors to the area to open up the towns for development.
"The Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has mandated all the newly appointed traditional rulers to transform the villages and settlements in our domains into towns.
"He asks us to use our connections, contacts and influence to bring developers and investors to develop our domains.
"I am working on plans to bring in investors that will build companies in Lukosi Land as well as cocoa buyers to boost cocoa business and farming in the area.
"However, when these investors and developers start coming, please do not sell your lands to them.
"You can lease the lands, but not sell, because your lands, which you inherited from your forefathers, are your heritage and part of your legacy.
"Selling your land means you are erasing your existence and depriving your children of their heritage," he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the villages and settlements visited included Kejiyoewa/Aba Fioye, Alabanla, Arile, Ajebamidele and Balogun Ojuade Lukosi Villages.
