Her Regal Majesty, Olori Temitope Morenike Enitan-Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has empowered over 1,000 elderly women with cash gifts and food items as part of activities marking the 52nd birthday of the Ooni of Ife.
The humanitarian initiative, which was held on Friday at the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, was organised to honour and celebrate elderly women in recognition of their invaluable contributions to their families and society.
The annual programme, which has been sustained for a decade, reflects the commitment of the Ooni’s household to promoting the welfare of senior citizens and ensuring that they are recognised, supported and celebrated.
Speaking with journalists at the event, Olori Temitope said the initiative had become a yearly tradition organised a day before the Ooni’s birthday to put smiles on the faces of elderly women in Ile-Ife.
According to her, over 1,000 women benefited from this year’s edition, marking the 10th year of the initiative.
“Over 1,000 women benefited from the programme. It is a yearly event, and this is the 10th year we have been doing it for our elderly women in Ile-Ife. We always organise it a day before the Ooni’s birthday.
“Everybody aspires to grow old, so there is no way we can overlook our elderly people. They deserve to be celebrated, irrespective of their background or status. The Ooni does not joke with them,” she said.
Olori Temitope emphasised the importance of caring for older people, noting that their contributions to the development of families, communities and society should never be forgotten.
She added that the initiative was designed not only to provide material support but also to make the beneficiaries feel loved, valued and remembered.
The distribution of cash and food items formed part of the Palace’s efforts to provide practical assistance to the elderly, many of whom face challenges associated with old age and limited financial resources.
One of the beneficiaries, 99-year-old Mrs Latifatu Oladimeji, expressed appreciation to the Ooni and Olori Temitope for remembering elderly women through the initiative.
